Melvyn Tolley, Windsor Chair Maker

I have been making Windsor chairs for over 20 years using traditional skills, patterns and craftsmanship. All of my chairs are individually handmade to measure ‘from tree to chair’. The iconic style combines craftsmanship, comfort and practicality which will suit both country and contemporary homes.

I work mainly to commission so each chair is as unique as the tree it came from and as individual as its user. There are no mass production techniques in the making of my chairs.

I use locally sourced, British hardwoods - elm, ash, oak, cherry and yew. The generous seat is of solid elm - shaped for comfort and support. The arms, back bows and crinolines are steam bent to shape. The decorative back splat is hand carved and the legs and underarms hand turned. Each chair is hand polished with oil and beeswax to reveal the unique grain and natural colour of the wood. This finish not only protects the wood for everyday use but allows for an enriching natural patina to develop, recreating the ageless classical elegance of a distinctive Windsor chair.

Oak smokers bow: full size and child's chairWhether you would like to commission a family heirloom, a unique gift to mark a special occasion, a copy of an antique Windsor to make up that elusive set or just a comfortable seat to enjoy, please telephone to discuss your requirements or arrange a visit to the workshop.

I always deal direct with the customer, you cannot buy my chairs in a shop or gallery. I am a member of Peak District Artisans (formerly Peak District Products) and often exhibit at group shows. Please see my exhibitions page for details of upcoming events.
